Ch 24

Scarlett

I fight hard not to wince at the immense change in my father’s appearance. He looks slimmer and a whole lot older. The stress of the last few months took years from his life.

He stiffens when Ethan approaches me for a kiss. On the cheek, mind you, but judging by my father’s glare, he might as well be stripping me naked out in public.

The hard look on my father’s face eases when I move away to introduce Esther and Blake to him. His natural playboy-self resurfaces as he takes Esther’s hand into his. “I’ve already had the honor to meet the lovely Miss Kaplan before.”

I bite off the chuckle.

“It’s Esther, please.” Esther narrows her eyes slightly as she watches her hand guided toward my father’s lips.

“I’m glad we could meet again, Esther.” My father brushes his lips lightly on Esther’s knuckles.

“This is Blake,” I say to rescue Esther from my father’s flirtatious introduction.

My father grabs Blake’s hand and yanks him in for a fatherly hug. “So, you’re the one I should thank to for my daughter’s life. You don’t have any idea how much I appreciate what you’re doing for my daughter.” His eyes turn wet, my teddy bear of a father. He’s always been so loving and tender toward me; his affection extends infinitely toward people who care for me.

Except for Ethan, apparently. He’s getting the cold shoulder from my father, as my father has me on one arm and Blake on his other arm while walking back through the gates without so much as a glance at Ethan.

Ethan manages to hide his wounded ego behind a deadpan look on his face, but I know he must feel furious at Blake, especially since he despises how much I appreciate Blake’s presence in my life.

“Did you know this is where Ethan grew up?” I say cheerfully when we step into the house that’s now mine.

My father shoots a judging glance around the large living room, not looking impressed. “Lovely house.” Then, he cranes his head slightly toward Ethan. “I’m curious to know how you could get your wife to agree to allocate such a valuable property to my daughter.”

“Dad!” I squeeze his arm gently, while Blake bursts into a chuckle before quickly resuming his trademark straight face.

Ethan clears his throat, his muscles tense. “Like Scarlett said, it’s the home I grew up in. My wife has no say in how I allocate my personal properties.”

“That says a lot about your marriage,” my father notes with an edgy, imposing tone in his voice.

More than his ways of allocating his property, the child in my womb should say enough about Ethan’s marriage with Abigail. I keep that thought to myself.

“Would you care for breakfast or brunch?” Esther asks, likely to ease the growing tension in the air.

“Sure, but I’d like to have a word with my daughter first. Is there a room we can talk in private?” my father replies, his voice completely gentle and back to seductive now that his words are directed to Esther.
